VP bans promotor from events!
After 12 years of activity, my clubnight VampireParty is forced to ban two people from all its events, due to their behaviour. And these people are scene promotors themselves, people who should set the right example... Let's start with a little history lesson. In 2006, I used to organise VampireParty in Ghent as well for a couple of times (as some might recall). One of those evenings, scene personality Bernd B. (who was forever been organising The Black Cave parties and concerts, as well as the recent Gothic Festival) and best friend Swanny were on their 'best behaviour', when they assaulted several people at the party, and thrashed a chair on their way out, for no apparent reason except for the fact they just COULD. Seeing as through the years, we had had several instances of trouble at VP, every time involving mister B., I felt a line had been crossed and in 2006, I sent him an e-mail, telling him I would rather not see him or his friend at any of my events anymore. Recently, Swanny has been to a few club nights (but without Bernd) and never caused any trouble, so... so far, so good. Fast forward to last Friday, where Bernd & co appear at VP, just before closing time. As I'm DJing, I only notice him when he is already inside. For a moment, I think of walking up to him and ask him to leave, but... party is almost over, I don't feel like argueing, so I give him the benefit of the doubt and don't say anything. Unfortunately... Just before the night ends, he gets into a short brawl with my co-promotor and DJ Sven. Police arrives on the scene and arrests both Bernd & Swanny, while Sven is taken to the hospital for a check up and injury report. I find it very disappointing, that someone who is such a pillar of the scene, can ruin the mood and image of that same so badly with such intolerable behaviour. If that's the kind of example he wants to set: booze up and riot... Nice, but not at my parties... And seemingly, they had already gotten into a fight as well at the Diary of Dreams show, earlier that night. I'm fed up with this behaviour, so I would like to publicly repeat, that from now on and forever, Bernd and Swanny will be denied entrance at any of my events, for reasons which I am sure are obvious to everyone. Mister Hive goes to Summer Drunkness
Summer Darkness is the end of the festival season for me and it were two incredible days. As usual, I had to run and DJ my clubnight on the Friday, but on Saturday? I could head out to Utrecht. This year, I had DJ duties on both Saturday and Sunday, spinning at De Helling all day, in between the bands. The weekend was fun-filled and action-packed, so much happened for a full review. I'll therefore keep it short, in bullet points. Those who want to hear more, should just bug me about it, next time they see me :-) * Saturday DJ-set: The soundguy was in the habit of turning down the volume a bit too much during sets (although sometimes he didn't), so I was forced to open up everything on my mixing panel, which of course resulted in a sucky, distorted sound. So it was kind of hard to create the right mood and keep people entertained in between the shows. * Best show Saturday: Patenbrigade: Wolff definitely! Good show, a nice of humour and great build up of their set! * Worst show Saturday: Alien Vampires. Maybe they need to decide what kind of music and show they want to bring, 'cause what we had now, did not make any sense. And... being drunk as a skunk on stage at three in the afternoon? Come on!! That's just wrong... * Had some very good moussaka at Greek restaurant Sirtaki * Saw 5 minutes of the Vive la Fete show and ran. Now I know again why I don't like Vive la fete (except for the song 'noir desir'...) * Summer Drunkness in effect at the Industrieel Nacht after-party. It was TOO noisy however and I decided to call it quits pretty soon. * After-party at my hotel was pretty nice. Let's make it a tradition next year :-) * Sunday DJ-set: Very little sleep and no time for breakfast. different soundguy from the day before. Had a talk with him and we were obviously on the same wavelength, so no problem with the sound volume during my sets. DJing went pretty well and I got a lot compliments on my mixing and on my choice of songs, and that's always cool when that happens :-) * Best show Sunday: Reaper. Vasi was obviously enjoying himself, making kojes in between songs. Good party atmospherre going on. All the Belgians in the venue were easily spotted during 'Robuste Maschine' LOL * Worst show Sunday: Skinjob. It wasn't really terrible, but it just seemed very bland and immemorable to me. * Honorary mention: Sonar, who managed to overheat the amplifiers three times, almost causing the show to end prematurely. The show literally made the whole building vibrate all the way up into the dressing rooms and catering area :-) * Most people left after the SITD show, to go see Mesh at Tivoli Oude Gracht. So at the end of the Sonar show, whomever was left, flooded out to see Mesh at that time as well, meaning I didn't have to DJ for long anymore and I was free to go and enjoy the end of the festival :-) * Went to find some food (Burger King for the win!) and then went to Oude Gracht where I basically spent the next couple of hours talking to people outside. * Had a quick visit to the excellent after-party and danced to a couple of songs! * Best after-party moment: 'Nelly the Elephant' together with Thomas of Nachtmahr/L'Ame Immortelle. (photo evidence is floating around on the internet LOL) * So, in conclusion: saw a lot of friends I hadn't seen for a while, made some new friends, lots of fun with my Belgian Posse (you know who you are!), saw some good shows. I'll be DJing at Summer Darkness in the 'De Helling' venue on Saturday 9 and 10 August. I'll be doing a warm-up set and will spin some tunes in between the bands. Bands performing that day are amongst others Patenbrigade: Wolff, Das Ich, Hocico, Reaper, SITD, Nachtmahr... Playlist Boudoir Bizarre - 05 July 08
On the Saturday, I made a small trip from Gelsenkirchen (Blackfield) to Amsterdam for a DJ gig at Boudoir Bizarre, one of Holland's biggest fetish events. It's the first time they had a dedicated electro-industrial floor, so nobody knew how that would work out. And it worked out great! Although the fetish-crowd is usually mainly into techno, the electro-industrial floor managed to draw in quite a few people as well. I had to do the closing set from 3 to 5AM and it was totally awesome. From track 1, I had everyone going and as my set progressed, it looked like the place filled more and more with semi-naked dancing people. Got several compliments, as well as people coming over and asking me what a particular track was, that I was spinning. Never seen a crowd that excited before (although that might not have only been my doing LOL) and people seemed a bit disappointed when I ended at 5. A totally wicked experience and one I hope to repeat at some point. Blackfield Festival
Last weekend's Blackfield Festival was a great experience. Perfect location, good turn-out, some excellent shows. Of what I saw, I particularly liked the Icon of Coil show (first show in several years and with updated version of their biggest hits), ModCom (Finally seen the show after missing it on several other occasions) and SITD (powerful, energetic and a crowd pleaser). Had to DJ at the after-party on Friday. Although there were constant requests for VNV, Covenant, Combichrist and Nitzer Ebb, I still managed to keep people happy with a decent and varied set. It was great to see so many old and recent friends again in the backstage area. Some of them, I haven't seen in years, but it's like we only last met last week. We had a lot of laughs and a few drinks (well, some had more than a few...). Blackfield will have its second edition next year, with headliners VNV Nation and ASP! weekend!!!
It's been awhile since I had such an action-packed, fun weekend... Friday was VP. Not as busy as I had expected, what with school exams being over. Maybe more people going to Graspop Festival than I thought... But still a nice and enthusiastic crowd, so we managed to keep the dancefloor going all through the night. My trusty LED-screen finally died on me, which meant that for once, people could not check what song was playing. Am going to look into the possibilities for an upgrade of that system. Just buying a new LED-screen, or maybe go with a flatscreen and find some software to use... Saturday was karaoke-night. Very busy night at the bar with probably about five bachelor night groups in there, so more crowded than usual. This also meant less chance to get your song played. In the end, I only took to the stage twice, once with INXS' 'Never tear us apart' (which is becoming a personal classic) and Marilyn Manson's version of 'Tainted Love' (which got the whole bar singing along...). We ended the evening at a cocktail-bar **very, very drunk** Sunday was rather quiet except a trip to the movies for 'The Incredible Hulk'. Pretty good movie, a lot better than the first one, but not as good as the recent 'Iron Man'. Still, job well done for Marvel Studios and I'm looking forward to another sequel. I'll be hanging around there all weekend as well (except for the Saturday night, when I have to go and DJ at Boudoir Bizarre in Zaandam - near Amsterdam NL). DJing @ TMO + IC434 after-party
Saturday, I had to DJ at the after-party for the Dark Men, This Morn'Omina and IC434 show. Got at the venue just after TMO started, so managed to catch part of that show, which was okay. IC434 brought a very powerful act, showcasing a lot of the songs of the new album and keeping the crowd dancing. Unfortunately, again, not too many people showed up, but I guess that's just a sign of the times. Luckily, the venue wasn't too big, so it did not seem like too empty. The IC434 show took away a lot of the energy of the audience, as lots of people just left when the after-party started (as happens so often at after-parties). By the time, I was up, there wasn't that many people left anymore, so I had to go with a pretty straight forward set of club hits, to keep the people on the dancefloor. Antwerp Dance Festival
Yesterday, the 1st edition of the Antwerp Dance Festival took place, where one ticket gave you access to 19 Antwerp clubs, all presenting some kind of big name. I decided to go have a look at Trentemoller, to start of the evening. And it was good, although the repetitiveness of it all got to me about half-way in his set. As I have noticed however with so many of these DJ-sets at techno-parties, here again, the crowd only really got going when some old 80s classics where dropped in the mix (equipped with some fresh beats, of course). The highlights yesterday where Art of Noise (Peter Gunn), Joy Division (Love will tear us apart) and The Cure (Lullaby), just driving the club crazy for a few minutes. Also commendable was the Rage Against the Machine mix, which made all the fancy clubbers act like it was a mosh-pit, while shouting 'Fuck you, I won't do what you tell me!' And that's the great thing about being a DJ, I think :) Anyway, leaving Trentemoller to finish his set, I headed out and ended up at another club, where I enjoyed the end of the set of Felix da Housecat. Nothing spectacular, but entertaining. After that, another trip to another club for the live show of Milk Inc. Wasn't as good as the open air show I saw last year though, so after a couple of tracks, I called it quits for the night. A weekend of English Madness
THAT was an interesting weekend :) After a smooth flight and an enjoyable evening out drinking with DJ Cyberchrist, catching up on personal stuff and our plans for world domination, on the Thurday, we headed to London on Friday for some shopping madness, some excellent Thai food (in probably the most seedy restaurant in Camden Town LOL) and an evening of drinks and loads of fun with DJ Cyberchrist's gang of party people. Sometimes, I thought I was going to die laughing... That was one hilarious bunch... Saturday, headed over to Sheffield for SYN @ The Corporation. Very cool club, very nice turn-out, a full dancefloor all the way through my sets and an audience that was very receptive to new music. Unfortunately, the club already had to stop at 2 AM, as does everything else in Sheffield. Bummer... Thanks to Gary for being an awesome host and all his good cares. Hope to be able to make it back later this year, when PureFuckingIndustrial (PFI) starts up again in London... Sunday was spent mostly relaxing and recovering and on Monday it was time to say goodbye to England for now... Off to the UK
My bags are packed, 60 CDs made the selection to take along, that will fit in my hand luggage (Never EVER putting a CD case with regular luggage again...). Tomorrow, I'm crossing the Channel! I'll be enjoying the London nightlife on Friday, and Saturday I'm DJing at SYN, Corporation (Sheffield). I'll be back in Antwerp on Monday evening. FANS Fashion Store, the local clothes store for anyone with a goth- or cyber-itch to scratch wanted to showcase some of their newest collections and asked me to come DJ at the store last Saturday afternoon. The store is situated in Antwerp's alternative fashion street (although in the last couple of years, big name brands have also moved into the neighbourhood) and gets a lot of visitors and passers-by on a Saturday. For the occasion, one of the store's window displays had also been cleared, for use by some Cyber-dancing girls. I have to say the afternoon was a big success. Pumping beats were blasting through the store and into the street all day and the cyber-girls drew a big crowd with each performance. A lot of the local scene-sters also dropped by for a chat, so there was a very relaxed and friendly atmosphere throughout the day. The store owner was very happy with the results and already wants to book me for another Saturday, probably at the end of the month, when the whole street is hosting a big alternative fashion event (with a catwalk all along the street and lots of side-entertainment).
